Deutsch DT vs DTM: which one does your loom need?
Teilen
Deutsch DT-series connectors are the workhorse of motorsport and off-road wiring: properly sealed, vibration-proof, field-serviceable, and cheap enough to use everywhere. The two sizes you'll actually choose between are DT and DTM.
The short version
- DT — size 16 contacts, rated up to 13 A, wire range roughly 0.5–2.0 mm². Power feeds, pumps, fans, lighting, anything with real current.
- DTM — size 20 contacts, rated up to 7.5 A, wire range roughly 0.2–1.0 mm² with a smaller, lighter shell. Sensors, signal runs, CAN, injector and coil sub-harnesses.
Rule of thumb: signals and small actuators → DTM; current → DT. If the circuit is fused above 7.5 A, it doesn't belong in a DTM.
What they share
Both use silicone interface and rear wire seals (no separate single-wire seals to pick — the rear seal grips the insulation directly, so stick to the listed insulation-OD range), both come in 2 to 12-way versions, and both are keyed so multi-connector clusters can't be cross-mated. Receptacles hold pins, plugs hold sockets — decide which side of your loom is live and put the sockets on the powered side where possible.
Don't skip the wedgelock
A DT connection is not complete without its orange wedgelock: it locks the contacts in their cavities and takes the vibration load. One per connector half, matched to way-count and side (pin wedge for receptacles, socket wedge for plugs). If you've ever had a Deutsch contact push back out of the housing, a missing or re-used wedgelock is why — they're single-use once removed with picks, so keep spares.
Solid vs stamped contacts
Deutsch contacts come as machined solid contacts and cheaper stamped/formed ones. Solid contacts crimp with a 4-indent tool (HDT-48-00 style) and are what we stock and recommend — consistent crimps, full rating, and one tool covers sizes 20, 16 and 12. Stamped contacts need a different (open-barrel style) tool and are best avoided on anything that matters.
Mounting
Both series take fir-tree mounting clips that snap into a chassis hole and hold the connector solidly — a tidier and quieter result than letting connectors dangle in the loom.
